About us

Welcome to Happidojo

We are a friendly family orientated judo club, which welcomes new players of all ages and abilities who would like to try this traditional Olympic sport in a safe and relaxed environment.

Happidojo are proud members of the British Judo Association and headed by UKCC Level 3 coach Colin McCallum. We offer classes throughout East Anglia for children from 5 years old to adult.

Our judo classes are taught by a team of fully-qualified coaches who are specialists in teaching judo from beginners all the way through to Dan grades, and we offer a range of classes to members of the general public, as well as clubs in schools in the both the public and private sector.

We firmly believe that judo is for everyone – regardless of age or ability. Whether you are trying judo just for fitness and fun, or if you decide to follow judo all the way through to competing at national level, we look forward to welcoming you to our Happidojo family.

The Happidojo Story:

The club originally began back in 2007 under Head coach Paul Nicholson, and was known back then as Marham Judo Club.  It had been, and still is, a strong competition club, and has had many players over the years, represent the club at Local, County, National and International Level.

Back in 2007, the McCallum family started their three boys at Marham Judo Club, and they enjoyed it so much, that they soon began competing for the club, winning many medals and trophies along the way.  In 2009 it was decided to enhance the boys’ training, by moving them to Happidojo Judo Club in Cambridge, under Head Coach Dave Southby (6th Dan.)  Dave had previously been on The British Olympic Squad for Ten years, won two Commonwealth Gold medals, along with numerous International medals.  He was also a Technical Director for the BJA and helped write their judo fitness programme.

Under Dave Southby’s vast technical knowledge and expertise, Colin McCallum decided to embark on his journey into judo, having watched his boys doing it for the last few years.  Within two years, he had gained his 1st Dan, is now a 2nd Dan, and is currently working towards his 3rd Dan. He has become a UKCC BJA Level Three (Elite) Coach, as well as a Senior National C Referee.  Colin also has a Safeguarding and Protection Certificate, First Aid Certificate, and is DBS checked.

In March 2014, Colin took over Marham Judo Club, and it was decided to keep it under the umbrella of Happidojo.  Family orientated, the whole McCallum family are involved in the club; and this ethos has continued with our other coaches at the club, whose children also train with us.
